Waukegan, IL - Motorcyclist Killed in Fiery Crash at Green Bay Rd and Sunset Ave

May 15, 2025

Waukegan, IL (May 15, 2025) – A tragic crash on May 12 left a motorcyclist dead and a busy intersection in Waukegan closed for several hours.

The collision occurred around 9:20 p.m. at the intersection of Green Bay Road and Sunset Avenue. According to officials, the crash involved a motorcycle and a passenger vehicle. Witnesses described a harrowing scene as the motorcycle became engulfed in flames, and the rider was pinned beneath the car.

A Lake County sheriff’s deputy, who was nearby on patrol, was one of the first to arrive. Working with a Waukegan police officer and multiple good Samaritans, they were able to lift the vehicle and pull the rider from underneath. Despite their rapid response and efforts by Waukegan first responders to revive the man, he was unresponsive and not breathing at the scene.

The 31-year-old Waukegan man was rushed to Vista Medical Center East, where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office. His identity has not yet been made public, pending notification of family members. An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday morning to determine the official cause of death. The intersection was shut down for several hours as police investigated the scene. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash or who may have been at fault.

We hope the family of the deceased finds peace and strength during this incredibly difficult time.

Motorcycle Accidents in Illinois

Waukegan, IL - Motorcyclist Killed in Fiery Crash at Green Bay Rd and Sunset AveMotorcycle accidents in Illinois often result in more severe injuries compared to passenger vehicle collisions. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, motorcycle crashes accounted for over 1,000 injuries and more than 150 fatalities in recent years. Riders are especially vulnerable due to limited protection and the difficulty many drivers have in spotting motorcycles in traffic.

One major concern in motorcycle accidents is rider visibility. Here are some key facts about common risks motorcycle riders face:

  • Limited Visibility to Drivers: Motorcycles are smaller and can easily fall into a vehicle’s blind spots. This makes lane changes, turns, and intersections particularly hazardous. Drivers must remain vigilant and check thoroughly before maneuvering.

  • Lack of Protective Barriers: Unlike cars, motorcycles offer no external protection. Even low-speed collisions can result in serious injuries such as fractures, head trauma, or internal injuries.

  • Weather Hazards: Rain, wind, and even uneven pavement can make motorcycle riding far more dangerous. Slippery roads and reduced traction are frequent causes of motorcycle loss-of-control incidents.

  • High Speed and Reckless Driving: Speeding remains a leading factor in fatal motorcycle crashes. Riders and other motorists must obey posted limits and drive with awareness of one another.

  • Inadequate Training or Licensing: Not all riders have gone through proper motorcycle safety courses. Operating a motorcycle requires unique skills and understanding of balance, braking, and road awareness.

  • Distracted Drivers: Drivers using phones or otherwise not paying attention pose a serious risk to motorcyclists. A momentary distraction can have fatal consequences for someone on two wheels.
