Gurnee, IL – Woman Killed, Three Seriously Hurt in Head-On Crash on Grand Ave

Gurnee, IL (November 11, 2025) – A devastating head-on collision along Grand Ave over Interstate 94 in Gurnee on Sunday, November 9, left one woman dead and three others, including two children, seriously injured amid slick road conditions caused by winter weather.
According to officials from the Gurnee Police Department and Gurnee Fire Department, emergency crews were called to the scene around 9 p.m. after reports of a serious crash involving multiple vehicles. Responders arrived to find two heavily damaged vehicles and several victims requiring immediate medical attention.
Police say a preliminary investigation revealed that a 2024 Chevrolet Suburban was traveling westbound on Grand Ave when the driver attempted to change lanes. Due to icy conditions, the Suburban reportedly struck a patch of ice, lost control, and crossed the center median into oncoming traffic. The vehicle then crashed head-on into a 2007 Ford Focus traveling eastbound.
The impact sent the Ford off the roadway and into a ditch near the I-94 cloverleaf. Tragically, the 29-year-old Evanston woman driving the Ford was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passengers, a 29-year-old Waukegan woman, her 5-year-old son, and her 8-month-old daughter, were transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with serious injuries. Their current conditions remain unknown.
Grand Avenue remained closed between Tri State Parkway and Dilleys Road until approximately 3:30 a.m. on Monday while crews worked to investigate and clear the wreckage. Officials said the crash is still under active investigation.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the woman who lost her life and wish the injured victims a full and swift recovery.
Car Accidents in Illinois

Winter weather conditions like ice, sleet, and snow are among the most dangerous hazards Illinois drivers face each year. According to data from the Illinois Department of Transportation, nearly 30% of all traffic crashes statewide occur on wet, icy, or snowy roads. Reduced traction, poor visibility, and longer braking distances increase the likelihood of collisions, especially on high traffic routes like Grand Ave and Interstate 94.
Drivers are urged to slow down, maintain a safe following distance, and avoid sudden movements on slick roadways. Failing to adjust to weather conditions can lead to catastrophic accidents that cause life-changing injuries or fatalities.
