Round Lake Heights, IL – Injury Crash Between Car and School Bus on Rollins Rd and Fairfield Rd

Round Lake Heights, IL (September 18, 2025) – A driver was cited after crashing into the rear of a stopped school bus in Round Lake Heights, Illinois. The crash took place early Tuesday morning, around 7 a.m., at the intersection of Rollins Road and Fairfield Road.
Police reported that a red Ford Focus was traveling eastbound on Rollins Road when the driver failed to reduce speed and collided with a school bus that was stopped at a traffic light. The bus, which was occupied by children, was not in motion when the crash occurred.
The Ford was left partially wedged underneath the rear of the bus. Thankfully, no children were injured. However, the driver of the Ford sustained injuries and was cited for failing to reduce speed.
Emergency responders from the Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District and Round Lake Heights Police Department quickly arrived on the scene. The Ford was removed by a flatbed tow truck, while the school bus was later driven back to the bus yard.
At this time, the investigation is ongoing, but authorities have confirmed the driver of the Ford was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash. Our thoughts are with those affected by this accident.
Distracted Driving and Speeding Risks
This crash highlights the dangers of speeding and the consequences of driving at an unreasonable speed. The driver’s failure to reduce speed when approaching a stopped school bus could have led to much more severe consequences. Fortunately, the children on the bus were unharmed.
In Illinois, the law requires drivers to stop when a school bus has its red lights flashing, and passengers are boarding or exiting the bus. The driver in this case was cited for not adjusting speed to the road conditions, which is an example of how negligence can cause accidents and injuries.
Distracted driving isn’t just about texting or talking on the phone. Driving too fast for road conditions or not adjusting your speed when approaching a stop can also be dangerous. These actions often lead to crashes that cause serious injuries, such as whiplash, brain injuries, or spinal cord damage. In the worst cases, these accidents can result in wrongful death.
